Makerere University, one of Uganda's top institutions, has experienced a drop in its ranking in the latest Africa university rankings. The rankings, released by Webometrics, reveal that Makerere University has fallen four places to the 17th position as of July 2023, down from its previous position at 13th at the beginning of the year. This news has sparked discussions within the academic community and highlights the need for continuous improvement in Ugandan universities.
The new rankings, conducted by Webometrics, also known as ranking web, were released on Monday, July 31st. The Webometrics ranking is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions, providing reliable and updated information about university performance worldwide.
Following Makerere University in the Ugandan rankings is Kampala International University (KIU), a private institution, which holds the 61st position. KIU has consistently secured the second position in Uganda for the past two years, a testament to its commitment to academic excellence.
Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) follows in the 116th position, while Kyambogo University has secured the 189th position. Notably, Kyambogo University has made progress on the global level, rising from the 4331st position to the 4177th position in the Webometrics rankings.
The Webometrics survey evaluates universities worldwide based on factors such as excellence, openness, and impact. With a total of 11,991 universities assessed, the rankings provide a comprehensive overview of the global higher education landscape. These rankings further categorize universities into continent clusters, enabling comparisons within specific regions.
The drop in Makerere University's ranking in the new Africa university rankings is a noteworthy development. It serves as a reminder that universities must continually strive for excellence and adapt to changing academic standards. 
While Kampala International University has maintained its position as the second-best university in Uganda, other institutions like Mbarara University of Science and Technology and Kyambogo University have also made progress in the rankings. These rankings provide valuable insights for universities to assess their strengths and weaknesses and devise strategies for improvement.
